THE NESTLÉ KIDS’ KITCHEN AND TRACEY GOING TURN UP THE HEAT

Research has shown that children are often exposed to under-nourishment during the transition stage from breast milk to a more solid diet. By six months of age, babies need other foods in addition to breast milk; however, the foods offered to infants are often insufficient in calories, protein and micronutrients, which could lead to growth and developmental problems.
In response to this, Nestlé have created a range of infant and toddler products. They offer a broad selection of products including Nestlé NESTUM, CERELAC and NUTREN JUNIOR, all of which will be available for you to try at The Baby Expo this year.
Nestlé is one of the largest food and beverage companies in South Africa whose aim is to be the leader in nutrition, health and wellness. “We have a dedicated Nestlé research centre, which keeps us in the forefront of research and development, and ensures the delivery of high quality, value adding products globally” says Belinda Vernon, Brand Manager from Nestlé.
But with so many varying products on the market, mothers are often confused about which products to choose. Nestlé makes this transition easy because they offer products suited for every developmental stage in your baby’s life and like you, only want the best possible start to your child’s life. The three products on show at The Baby Expo are designed with exactly this in mind.
Nestlé CERELAC is the ideal choice for a mom who is starting to introduce solids to her little one. It is nutritionally complete, meaning that it already contains milk, so only water has to be added. CERELAC also compliments the milk feeds perfectly as it has the nutritional value of a fully balanced meal thus ensuring optimal growth and development in this critical stage of life. The newly introduced CERELAC Gold has the added benefit of prebiotics and probiotics, which are known for enhancing the immune system and promoting digestive comfort.
The CERELAC Gold range comprises of two yummy stage choices, rice with juicy apple and cranberry (Stage 1) and oats with prunes (Stage 2), both available for tasting at the Nestlé food court at this year’s The Baby Expo. CERELAC Gold (Stage 1) is formulated for babies who are just starting on their solids. The apples in the product are a great source of simple soluble fibres called pectin, while the cranberries provide antioxidants. CERELAC Gold (Stage 2) is for little ones who have mastered the first skills of being able to swallow and have started experiencing a wider variety of solid foods. The combination of the oats with the prunes makes sure that baby’s digestive system is kept regular and healthy.
Nestlé NESTUM is the perfect way to introduce your 6-month old to a new taste adventure while still offering them all the energy, protein, vitamins and minerals needed to ensure optimal growth and development. NESTUM has a wide range of uses such as being mixed with baby’s normal milk to create a delicious cereal that can be eaten any time of the day and it can also be used as a bridging food to introduce new flavours and textures to your baby, such as vegetables and fruits.
Nestlé NESTUM can be used as a fortifier, by using it as an ingredient in other foods thereby making it something nutritious that kids can try and are sure to love. Why not try out the recipe below to see for yourself:

- Place close together on tray. Bake for 12-15 minutes or until scones sound hollow when tapped.
- Transfer to a wire rack. Allow to cool.
- Serve with butter & honey.
Their third product on show this year is the Nestlé NUTREN JUNIOR, which was developed by the Nestlé Healthcare Nutrition division. It is a balanced nutritional supplement formulated to meet the needs of children between the ages of 1 and 10 years old; who, for whatever reason, are not getting their full nutritional intake on a daily basis. It is lactose and gluten free, making it suitable with little ones with allergens.
The delicious vanilla flavour makes it a favourite on its own or as used within a recipe. The powder can be mixed with water and enjoyed as a drink, poured over a child's breakfast cereal, or mixed with fruit and can even be used to make yummy yoghurt smoothies.
The product differs from other nutritional supplements in being a blend of 50% whey protein and 50% casein protein (both fractions of cows' milk proteins), which means that the product is contains more whey protein than any other children’s supplements. High whey content improves tolerance, prevents indigestion thus promoting healthy digestion to support normal growth and development. Children who will benefit include those who are not eating well because they have been through, or are about to, have surgery or have been ill as well as the fussy eaters.
Proving their commitment to the nourishment of South African children, Nestlé will be running a Kids Kitchen at all of The Baby Expos this year. The fully functional kitchen will include a working zone, kids demo area and visitor seating. The area will be a continuous hub of activity in a semi-enclosed casual environment. Tracy’s new recipe book, African Animals Recipes & Rhymes is sure to delight adults and kids alike with its easy to follow recipes and fun to learn rhymes.
